Discussion boards guidelines

Welcome to our discussion boards area

Please read the guidelines below for the discussion boards before posting a message.

About the boards

These are supportive, non-commercial discussion boards. Discussion boards are a way of posting thoughts, questions and opinions for other visitors to respond. You can either respond to an existing message, or create a new topic for debate yourself. After reading messages for a while, please join in and start posting your own messages and take part.

The boards are intended to provide a forum for you to exchange information, opinions and comments. Please remember that this is a public space, open to all age groups, so while we welcome your opinions, please word your comments appropriately.

Your use of this service is subject to the following rules, which, by your use of the service, you are deemed to accept.

How to use the boards

Simply clicking any of the discussion board buttons on this page will take you to the discussion board index page. This page contains a list of the topics currently open for discussion.

First make sure you're registered and logged on to the website. Enter the forum you are interested in by clicking on the heading (e.g. "Treatment Talk")

Reading a message click the title of the topic you want to read and respond to. First-time users may wish to spend a little time reading messages already posted before contributing to the debate.

Posting a message you can post your own message in response to another, just click on "Post reply to this message", add what you want to say and post the message. Your message (also called posting) will then be added to the Board, and other visitors will be able to respond to it.

Starting a new discussion if you want to start a new discussion, to make it more useful for everyone, be sure to use appropriate subject lines that explain the content of your message.

Emailing direct you can also engage in a private conversation with someone who has posted a message by clicking on their name. But, as with all postings, think carefully before you give out any personal information online. Never give your telephone number, home address, or other information to strangers.

Rules

The discussion boards are intended to be a forum for debate and discussion about mental health. Please act within these rules, for the benefit of everyone. While emental-health.com does not prescreen postings, we reserve the right to remove material which breaks these rules. Please tell us, via webmaster@psychmed.co.uk, if you believe someone is breaking them.

  1. Language and behaviour - the boards allow you to exchange ideas with people from all over the world. Like any community, however, ours only works if we all treat each other with respect. Remember that people's personal and professional experiences of mental health may differ. Please refrain from using rude, offensive, racist or sexist language on the discussion boards. Slanderous, defamatory, obscene, indecent, lewd, pornographic, violent, abusive and insulting comments are not tolerated. Please do not attempt to harass, threaten or embarrass other users of the discussion boards. Don't impersonate another user, or emental-health.com. And don't post the same note more than once.
  2. Use your judgment about the opinions and views of others - seek professional advice before relying on any of the information you find in posts. The opinions and views expressed do not necessarily represent those of emental-health.com and emental-health.com does not verify, endorse or vouch for the content of the discussion boards.
  3. Advertising - no commercial usage, solicitations or advertisements are allowed in the discussion boards.
  4. Therapy/crisis intervention The boards are for exchanging ideas. We hope they do prove supportive but it is not appropriate to conduct any sort of 'e-therapy', online psychotherapy, or any other professional intervention in the context of the forums or chat rooms. If you are feeling suicidal or you are in a crisis, contact a health professional (your GP or a member of your mental health team). Help is also available online through The Samaritans free e-mail service.
  5. Copyright - please do not post copyrighted material (for example, information taken from someone else's site, or from a book that the authors have not given you permission to use) on the boards. Instead, please use links instead of quotes.
  6. Liability - Emental-health.com accepts no responsibility for any statements, material or other submissions placed on this website by you or any third party, or for any loss or damage resulting from your breach of these rules.

Other legal information

Copyright of postings resides with emental-health.com. By posting a message, you grant emental-health.com the right to modify and publish that information on the site and in other media. The owners of the site reserve the right to re-use postings without first informing the poster.

By posting on this site, you agree to the above rules. We may revise these guidelines from time to time. Using the discussion boards assumes knowledge of and agreement with the policies in place at the time.

These guidelines were added in February 2001
